BANGKOK, Aug. 26 (Xinhuanet) -- A French man was arrested in eastern Thailand on Thursday for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl.

The 56-year-old French man named Jean Claude Chamoux was arrested by police at his condominium in the tourist town of Pattaya on eastern coast.

He was alleged of having sex with the eight-year-old girl with a price of 1,000 baht (about 25 US dollars) each time, Bangkok Post on Friday quoted police as saying.

The money was given to the girl's mother, who allegedly rented her daughter for money to support her medical treatment for HIV/AIDs. She was arrested too.

Police seized more than 100 photographs from Chamoux's place of he having sex with the girl.

Chamoux was also charged with having sex with other young girls under the age of 18, including one 12-year-old.

Police said he would face life imprisonment if convicted.

The Thai authorities have working hard to fight against child prostitution, but the kingdom is still facing severe situation.

Quoting data from the Thai government and research groups, a child rights organization, the ECPAT International estimated that 12,000 to 80,000 Thai children were in the sex business.

In a related development, an Australian man was arrested on Tuesday on charge of detaining and raping a 16-year-old Thai girl over the past four years.
